Visual communication 4 - Summer 2023
Wall Sconce
A Three Week mini-project to build on CAD and Keyshot rendering skills. With emphasis on utilizing Fusion 360 and Photoshop to ideate and refine design concepts.
Ideation in Fusion 360:
As opposed to using traditional sketching and ideation methods, with this project I chose to use Fusion 360 as a platform to develop ideas in 3D. Unique Gravity Sketch or similar programs, Fusion is not often used for such work, but its familiar interface and tools allowed me to develop concepts not only faster, but in more detail and with the ability to see the come to life in miniature 3D Printed prototypes.
Refine in Photoshop:
I had not often used Photoshop for design refinement in the past, and while it is not my preferred tool for such work I cannot deny the efficiency and detail at which I could assess and refine the minutia of my design in a digital software. It allowed for far more precision and flexibility, but at times felt slow and somewhat overwhelming for fast refinement.
Render in Keyshot:
Keyshot initially struck me as somewhat of a challenge, as it is not a program I had used much in the past. That said, after some trial and error I found my own sweet spot for lighting and setting up scenes in a way the produces desirable images with a good emphasis on the product itself.
Prototype Construction (WIP)
While 3D is a fantastic tool for developing and ideating concepts I do find that physical prototyping is an essential step in the design process. And while I ordinarily like to build prototypes by hand I decided to 3D print my lamp in fragments, with the final pieces made and finished entirely by hand.
